As my dog Maycee is getting older. She, like myself, seems to appreciate the cold less each year. For Christmas I decided to get her a dog coat. As with most things, I decided to do some research to find a coat that is cost effective, but also has good value. After researching and reading reviews for many different coats I pulled the trigger on the Lepelet dog coat.
There are many offerings in a similar price range, but the Lelepet seems to have the best overall reviews. Overall, it appears that the Lelepet dog coat is a well-received product among customers, offering warmth, convenience, and a secure fit for dogs during cold weather. However, it’s essential to carefully consider the sizing chart and measure your dog accurately to ensure the best fit.
I was definitely thrown off by the sizing. Having been a dog owner my entire life I don’t think of Maycee as being extra large. She weights in around 50 pounds. However based on the reviews I referenced the sizing chart provided and took measurements of her neck, chest and back length (from the base of her neck to the top of her tail). XL it was. Others have complained about sizing issues, which is why I referred to the sizing chart and took actual measurements before ordering. I’m assuming others did not follow the same process, based on the complaints about sizing challenges.
Putting the coat on Maycee was a bit of a challenge, more due to her than the coat itself. She wasn’t really happy about the process and zipping it up is a bit awkward. However, after going through it once we got it mastered. She wasn’t happy about the coat at first and actually stood frozen in my living room for about 10 minutes as per the photo to the right. So cute!
The coat fits pretty well overall. I believe a size smaller would have been too tight and one size larger would have definitely been too loose. As others have stated, it would be nice to have some additional straps to snug the coat up around her belly. The elastic cord to snug the neck up is nice and keeps the cold air out.
The zipper is easy to use and the clip adds some additional security and peace of mind along with dual D rings for attaching the leash on the back. Maycee is a puller so having the connection on the back keeps her from choking herself. I thought for sure she would pull with the jacket, but to my surprise she hasn’t been as bad as I was expecting.
During our first walk I stuck my hand inside the coat and it was warm. In fact I only put it on her when the temperature is in the 40s and below. Otherwise she seems to get hot. The coat seems to be of good quality, but time will tell with the durability. Some reviewers stated it is waterproof, however it is only water resistant. This is fine by me as neither one of us likes the rain, Maycee even less than me.
